Well prepared for your holiday

Sun, sea, relaxation… but also: documents, insurance, and emergencies.
So how do you make sure you're well-prepared for your trip? With these five tips, you'll head off on your holiday well-insured and stress-free.

Plan Your Toll Costs Wisely

Driving abroad? Be prepared for toll roads in countries like France, Italy, or Spain. You can save time by purchasing a toll badge or vignette (sticker) in advance. In many places, an environmental sticker is also required. For more information, visit the ANWB website.

Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card)

As of January 1, 2025, the green card is also accepted in digital form in many European countries. In the Netherlands, you're not required to carry it. However, in countries like Albania, Azerbaijan, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Ukraine, Tunisia, and Turkey, you are still required to carry a physical green card (IMIC). The document may also be printed on white paper.

Important Phone Numbers

In case of an emergency, you want to act quickly. Save important numbers — such as your insurer’s emergency helpline — in your phone and write them down on paper as well. Keep that list in a fixed place so you can easily find it if needed.

Let Someone Know You're Away

Inform friends, family, or neighbors that you’re going on holiday. Not just for the sake of keeping in touch, but also for safety. Ask someone to check your mail occasionally or keep an eye on your home. That way, you can enjoy your vacation without worry.

Don't Forget Your Travel Insurance

A travel insurance policy can save you thousands of euros in case of breakdown, illness, or damage during your trip. Check in advance whether you have the right policy and if your coverage matches your destination and planned activities. A cancellation insurance policy is also a smart idea, especially for more expensive trips. Note: cancellation coverage often needs to be arranged within a few working days after booking your trip.

Also check whether your travel or car insurance includes roadside assistance or replacement transport — so you're not caught off guard.
