Ready for autumn? How to get on the road safely
Autumn brings typical challenges for every road user. Think of poor visibility, wet roads and the slippery surface due to wet leaves. Prevention is better than cure, which is why it is crucial to take the necessary precautions now.
Especially in this period, good preparation is half the battle. With a few simple checks, you can ensure that your car is ready for autumn and that you can hit the road safely.
Control your lighting
Good lighting is more important than ever in the autumn. Check that all your lights, headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals, are working properly. Also, make sure that your headlights are clean and properly adjusted so that they illuminate the road properly without dazzling oncoming traffic.
Check your tyres
Your tires are the only contact with the road. Make sure you have sufficient tread depth (at least 1.6 mm, but at least 4 mm is recommended for winter tyres) and correct tyre pressure. This ensures optimal grip on a wet and slippery road surface. For the first cold days, consider fitting your winter tyres, which perform better at temperatures below 7°C.
Keep your windows clean
Visibility is crucial. Make sure your windows are clean inside and out. Fill the windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid that is resistant to frost. Also, check that your wipers are still working properly and replace them if necessary. Worn wiper blades leave streaks, which greatly obstructs visibility.
Customize your driving style
Wet leaves, rain and fog will significantly increase your braking distance. Therefore, keep extra distance from the vehicle in front. Reduce your speed, especially when cornering and in areas where the road surface can be slippery. Be extra alert to vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
