More and more people are choosing to drive electric vehicles, and for many of them this includes having their own charging option. Charging your car at home is not only comfortable but also practical: it means you can leave the house every day with a full battery.

Charging options are expensive

A charging station, wall box, or mobile charging point can easily cost more than €2,000, including installation. If the device is damaged or stolen, you probably don’t want to pay for it yourself. But how is this covered by your existing home insurance policies?

Good news: in many cases, charging stations are insured through the building insurance or household contents insurance. Exactly how this works depends on the situation. Below we outline common situations and the corresponding insurance.

Owner-occupied house

Do you have a fixed charging station installed at your home? In most cases, this is covered by the building insurance. Do you have a mobile charging point? Then it falls under your household contents insurance, because it is considered an accessory to your car.

Owner-occupied apartment

Do you have a fixed charging station at your owner-occupied apartment? Then it is important to carefully review your household contents insurance. You can insure the charging station through your household contents insurance by adding owner’s interest coverage, an additional form of coverage.

This is because the building insurance for an apartment complex is arranged through the Homeowners’ Association (VvE). This makes it more difficult to insure your personal property—such as a charging station—through that policy.

Rental home

Have you installed a fixed charging station at a rented house or apartment? In that case, you can include the device in your household contents insurance through tenant’s interest coverage.
