Going on Holiday? Don't Forget This

The excitement of a holiday often starts the moment you book it. You choose a beautiful destination and look forward to a wonderful time away. However, it is also important to consider potential risks. With good preparation, you can avoid unpleasant surprises.

What Should You Arrange Before You Leave?

Good preparation can make the difference between a carefree holiday and unexpected problems. These are the most important things not to forget.

Make Sure You Have the Right Coverage

Travel insurance often covers more than you might think. This can include medical expenses abroad, damage to or theft of luggage, and assistance in emergency situations. Always check carefully what is and is not covered.

Be Aware of Medical Costs Abroad

Your health insurance usually reimburses medical expenses based on Dutch rates. In many countries, healthcare costs can be significantly higher. Without additional coverage, you will have to pay the difference yourself. A travel insurance policy can help cover these extra costs.

Cancellation or Cutting Your Trip Short

Sometimes a trip does not go as planned. With cancellation insurance, you may be able to recover costs if your trip is cancelled or if you need to return home early, provided the reason falls within the policy conditions.

Arrange Your Insurance in Time

It is advisable to take out your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, especially if you want cancellation coverage. In many cases, this coverage is only valid if arranged within a few days of booking.

Report Incidents Immediately

If you want to make a claim for theft, loss, or robbery, report the incident to the local police immediately while abroad. Insurers generally require a police report as proof that the incident actually occurred.
If filing a police report is not possible, report the incident to your hotel owner or travel organisation and ask for written confirmation of the report.

Travel to the Middle East

According to most insurance policy conditions, the current situation in parts of the Middle East may be classified as acts of war or civil unrest ("molest" under Dutch insurance terminology), including war, armed conflicts, or large-scale disturbances. Damage resulting from such events is generally excluded from coverage under most insurance policies.
In these situations, you will usually need to rely on the airline or travel organisation through which you booked your trip. Flight-related costs should always be claimed directly from the airline.
If you have booked a package holiday, it is advisable to check whether you may be entitled to compensation through the Dutch Calamity Fund (Calamiteitenfonds). It is also important to stay in close contact with your travel provider so that you remain informed about current developments and any available alternatives.

Ready for Departure?

Whether you are going away for a weekend or embarking on a long-distance journey, proper preparation is essential. Put travel insurance at the top of your checklist and enjoy your trip with peace of mind.
