Important Changes as of 1 July 2026

The year is already nearly halfway through, which means a number of legislative and regulatory changes are coming into effect. We have listed the most important changes as of 1 July 2026, including updates to the minimum wage and child support payments. Want to know more?

1 July, together with 1 January, is an important date for new laws and regulations in the Netherlands. Several significant changes will take effect next month, which may impact your finances—either positively or negatively. It is therefore important to review these changes carefully so you are not caught by surprise.

Statutory Minimum Wage Increases

From 1 July 2026, the statutory minimum wage will increase by 2.42%. As a result, the minimum hourly wage for full-time employees aged 21 and over will rise from €14.71 to €14.99 per hour.

You can find the corresponding gross amounts per month, week, or day on the Dutch government's website. This increase also applies to people receiving AOW (state pension) or WW (unemployment) benefits.

Maximum Rent Increase for Social Housing

From 1 July 2026, the maximum rent increase for social housing will be 4.1% (down from 5% before 1 July 2026), or between €25 and €100. The exact increase depends on your current rent level and household income.

New Rules for Electricity Connections

Due to growing pressure on the electricity grid, new rules for new or upgraded electricity connections will take effect from 1 July 2026.
In areas where the electricity network has reached capacity, households requesting a larger connection—for example for a heat pump, EV charging station, or home extension—may be placed on a waiting list. This could affect plans to make homes more sustainable or energy-efficient.
